How do I use the screen on my Nikon D60 to take pictures? I don’t want to use the viewfinder ALL the time?

I want to use the 2.5 inch display when taking pictures and not always the viewfinder. Nowhere in my manual does it say how to do this.

It’s true, the D60 is a DSLR and you cannot use the LCD to take a picture. There is only a few DSLR models which has a Live View mode. Currently from Nikon there is only the D90, D3 and D300 that has this Live View mode.

If you recently bought your camera and want this feature you might want to upgrade to the D90. It has a nice 3 inch LCD display and can also take HD 720p videos.

Point and Shoot cameras always have a “live view modes” because of how it’s built. The light that enters the camera hits directly on the sensor which takes a picture. This means the sensor can continuously capture the image and display it on the LCD. This is why theses cameras often have a video mode.

DSLR (Digital Single-Lens Reflex) cameras are like Point and Shoot cameras when it’s taking the picture. While taking the picture the light that enters the camera hits the sensor directly. However before taking a picture a mirror inside the camera is lowered and deviates the light to the viewfinder. This allows us to have a true live view while looking in the viewfinder. Once the shutter is released to take a picture this mirror lifts and the light is then sent to the light sensor to take a picture. And that’s what makes the sound when you take a picture.
